The Research School of Earth Sciences is Australia’s leading academic program in Earth and Marine Science, and 9th ranking in the 2018 QS world rankings by discipline. We are seeking a Research Software Engineer with experience in computational science and high-performance computing, and with well-developed skills in scientific programming, numerical methods, scaling and optimising codes, code/data management and algorithm development.  The role will support research endeavours in computational fluid dynamics, ocean/climate modelling and geodynamical modelling of the Earth system, utilising high-performance computing, visualisation and big-data approaches.

Position overview

This position will support research the Climate & Fluid Physics and the Seismology & Mathematical Geophysics Research groups (principally the computational geodynamics sub-group) at the Research School of Earth Sciences. The Climate & Fluid Physics group conducts ground-breaking research into the dynamics and thermodynamics of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and land surface. The computational geodynamics group conducts inter-disciplinary research into the thermo-chemical structure and dynamical evolution of Earth’s mantle, and its expression at Earth’s surface. Through this position, we are looking to strengthen the capacity of both groups to further develop and maintain the software infrastructure necessary for cutting edge research.
